Sound quality
In terms of sound quality, we found that the JBL Xtreme 3 produces significantly more powerful and boomier bass than the Charge 5 at greater volumes. The bass on the Xtreme 3 has a lot of depth and presence, and with over 50% volume, it feels extremely tight and preset, and it gets considerably louder as you increase the volume.
JBL Charge 5 is more suited to smaller spaces, yet it can fill a big living room or a reasonably sized yard. The Xtreme 3 is one of the few wireless speakers in its price range that can produce huge or broad stereo sound.
Design and look
Along with the revised design language, they both have JBL’s larger and bolder logo than on its earlier speakers, which more closely reflects an identification than a prominent design element.
The JBL Xtreme 3’s design is unique in that it enables you to quickly and conveniently carry the speaker by securing the carry-on across your shoulder.
The carry-on is attached to the speaker using two steel clips at the top of the device, which we thought was a really useful feature for portability.

Since its release, the Xtreme 3’s price has also dropped, although it is still on the higher end of the market for Bluetooth speakers without wifi. Originally priced at $350, it currently sells for about $275 online.

Battery
There aren’t many differences between the Charge 5 and Xtreme 3 feature sets because they are quite similar offerings. The more modern Bluetooth 5.1 version, which has a strong wireless connection and a long-range (240 meters), is available on both of them.
One distinction is the battery: the Xtreme 3 has a 10,000mAh battery, whereas the Charge 5 has a 7500mAh unit. In spite of this difference, the Charge 5’s battery life is actually longer than the Xtreme 3’s—20 hours as opposed to 15. That’s most likely because the Charge 5 only has a 40W power output, whereas the Xtreme 3’s 100W power output requires more electricity to run.
Conclusion: Which one won the race?
The JBL Charge 5 and Xtreme 3 speakers are both excellent choices. That’s the reason, after all, that they both had five-star reviews. But the Charge 5 wins out for us due to its cheaper cost and excellent audio quality (along with a longer battery life).
However, if a louder, richer sound is what matters to you, you don’t mind a larger, heavier speaker, and money isn’t an object, the Xtreme 3 might be a better fit.
